Friday night’s European Championship qualifying match between Montenegro and Russia was abandoned after visiting goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was hit by a lit flare.
The match had already been suspended for 30 minutes in the first half after Akinfeev was struck on the head by a flare thrown by home fans from the stands just 20 seconds after kick-off. He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and taken to hospital in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, wearing a neck brace. Uefa doctor Slobo Mandic went with Akinfeev to the hospital and said the goalkeeper was conscious. Trouble between fans and police also took place before the game outside the stadium when the Russians and Serbs (about 200 Serbs supported Russian fans) tried to burn the USA flag.
