The Sarajevo Derby between Zeljeznicar and FK Sarajevo is the biggest match in Bosnia. The derby is closely linked with the War in the Balkans that took place between 1992 and 1995. Zeljeznicar’s stadium was located behind enemy lines, and became more of a battleground than a pitch. Following the war, supporters of the two sides felt a deeper bond then ever to their clubs. Football became a tool for piece in post-war Sarajevo, helping people heal from the scars of the past.
Today, the city continues to be divided by Blue and Red. The derby between the two sides is tense and the stands are always electric. When the supporters make their way to the ground they are not propelled into a different mindset.
